Vancouver Bar Workers Win $1 Million Lotto Max Prize
A group of 15 coworkers at Foy’s Irish Bar in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood is celebrating a life-changing $1 million Lotto Max win. The friends, most of whom are originally from Ireland, decided to pool their money and buy a lottery ticket for the first time, never imagining they would strike it rich.
James Browne, one of the winners, expressed his disbelief: “Absolutely life-changing. I never thought I’d be able to afford a down payment on a house in Vancouver, but now that’s exactly what this money is going towards.”
The win has brought immense relief to the group, many of whom have struggled with the high cost of living in Vancouver. “A couple of people in the group are a couple, and they have a little baby. It’s a game changer for them as well,” Browne added. “The city is expensive, and this win will make a huge difference in all our lives.”
Olivia Lyons, another winner, was initially skeptical when she heard the news. “I just replied in the group chat, ‘I am just signing my child up for private school now, so if you’re wrong, you’re paying this bill,’” she recalled with a laugh. Lyons and her partner plan to use part of their winnings to take their baby back to Ireland to meet his extended family.
Despite the joy, not everyone at the bar was so lucky. Lyons noted that a few coworkers missed out on the win because they hadn’t joined the pool in time. “They’re happy for us, but they’re obviously disappointed as well,” she said.
The group plans to celebrate their win with a party at the bar, marking the occasion with the close-knit camaraderie that has defined their experience working together far from home.
