The Last of Us Part II‘s creative director told fans not to believe the recent batch of leaks, claiming the game’s ending hasn’t actually been spoiled online.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Neil Druckmann spoke out about the recent drama and revealed the spoilers aren’t all that they seem. “We don’t want to go out there and correct anything because that would be spoiling the game in a way – by saying what it isn’t, we’re kind of saying what it is,” explained Druckmann. He concluded, “There are all these theories about what the ending is but the ending is not out there. You actually don’t know how it all comes together.” It’s worth noting that the previous leaks came from an early build of the game and might not accurately represent the finished product.

2013’s The Last of Us was praised for reinventing the survival-horror genre, selling over 17 million copies. With Part II‘s preorders are set to top Insomniac’s Spider-Man on the PlayStation 4, there’s a lot of hype surrounding the next chapter. The Last of Us Part II picks up as a direct sequel to the original game and will back protagonists Ellie and Joel with a five-year time jump.
While the spoilers might not be 100% correct, Druckmann has also warned not everyone will like how the story wraps up. With the first game centering on the theme of love, The Last of Us Part II will revolve around hate and has fans speculating what will send Ellie on her mission of vengeance. Back when Part II was in development, there were fears Troy Baker’s Joel had been killed off during the gap. Druckman has promised Joel will have a “central role” alongside Ellie, but apart from that, the storyline is shrouded in mystery.
Although the spoilers didn’t come from someone connected to Sony or Naughty Dog and were quickly pulled, they reappeared on various forums and are still able to read if fans look hard enough. With the leaks coming so close to The Last of Us Part II‘s release, Naughty Dog hasn’t changed its story, and instead, asked players to avoid them so as not to ruin the story. Druckmann’s latest words suggest that what’s online doesn’t cover everything, but with The Last of Us Part II heading toward its release, there isn’t much time left to wait to find out more.
Developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part II will be released for PlayStation 4 on June 19.
