The chief scientist at the World Health Organization, Sumiya Swaminathan, announced that young and healthy people may have to wait until 2022 to obtain a vaccine against the emerging corona virus “Covid-19”.
Swaminathan confirmed that health workers and those most at risk due to the emerging corona virus will have priority in receiving the vaccine if it is ready.
Swaminathan’s comments came at a time when experiments to produce an anti-Corona vaccine in several countries are still in full swing for months, amid escalating talk about priorities for getting the vaccine, according to Sky News.
“Most people agree that vaccination should start with health care workers and frontline workers with Covid-19 patients, but we also need to determine which of them is most at risk, then the elderly,” Swaminathan said.
She added, “There will be a lot of instructions that will be issued later in this regard, but I think that the average person, a healthy young person, may have to wait until 2022 to get a vaccine.”
Swaminathan hoped that at least one effective vaccine would be available by 2021, but indicated at the same time that it would only be available in “limited quantities.”
