Pharmacists across the province are reminding British Columbians of the importance of getting a flu shot prior to holiday festivities.
According to Gianni Del Negro, a pharmacist with London Drugs, the flu shot is not only useful for ensuring you do not contract the virus, but it also protects those who may be more susceptible to serious illness.
“For healthy individuals, catching the flu might put a bit of a damper on the holidays but for those who are more vulnerable – like babies, young children, the elderly and people with certain health conditions – the flu can be deadly,” said Del Negro.
“It is important to do everything you can to ensure you’re not passing along the flu virus to them, so get your flu shot for grandma’s sake.”
There were 143 cases of lab-confirmed Influenza A, and seven confirmed cases of Influenza B reported to the BC Centre for Disease Control, between the start of their last surveillance and this flu season.

The highly contagious virus can live up to two days on contaminated objects, and can be spread within five minutes from person to person through infected airborne droplets on the skin, making holiday get-togethers a breeding ground for illness.
“People are socializing more, with lots of hugs, kisses and handshakes being exchanged, getting vaccinated is the best defense,” said Del Negro.
The vaccination can take up to two weeks before it becomes effective, which is why getting vaccinated sooner is always better.
Other precautionary measures that pharmacists recommend people take include:
-
Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly.
-
Limit physical contact with infected individuals.
-
Prioritize sleep and self-care.
-
Keep your hands away from your face.
-
Try to avoid handshakes
-
Use paper towel to open doors and turn on taps in public washrooms.
-
Use hand sanitizer often.
Stay safe and healthy this holiday season!
