Erratic driving leads to many charges
A Guelph male faces a long list of charges after a stolen vehicle was observed driving erratically Thursday afternoon.
Just after 2 p.m., police observed a vehicle speeding through the parking lot of a plaza at Gordon Street and Clair Road, then speed southbound on Gordon Street passing other cars on the gravel shoulder.
Officers observed the vehicle pulling into a driveway on Maltby Road and saw a male fleeing on foot into a field. He was caught after a short foot pursuit but actively resisted attempts to get him under arrest.
Investigation revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from another jurisdiction and had altered licence plates attached. A search of the vehicle revealed small amounts of suspected cocaine and marijuana in the console area, as well as a wallet containing identification in various people’s names.
A 35-year-old Guelph male faces more than a dozen charges including dangerous driving, possessing stolen property over $5,000, resisting arrest, possessing a controlled substance, possessing identity documents and driving while prohibited. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.
Impaired charge following collisions
A Guelph male faces impaired and dangerous driving charges following a collision in the downtown core Thursday night.
Police received several calls after a vehicle was rear-ended at Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street just after 11:30 p.m. Officers arrived and saw the suspect vehicle driving on the wrong side of Wyndham Street and run a red light to turn onto Quebec Street.
The vehicle was eventually stopped on Chapel Lane, but as officers tried to remove the driver his vehicle rolled forward and collided with a Guelph Police Service cruiser. Officers detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath and he was showing signs of impairment. The male was arrested and taken to the police station, where testing revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
A 39-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation, failing to stop at a collision and driving a vehicle with open alcohol. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court April 22, 2022.
Stolen e-bikes, tools found in downtown apartment
Two stolen e-bikes and a large quantity of stolen tools were recovered Thursday from a downtown apartment.
The Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit received information earlier this week about suspected stolen property being stored at an apartment unit in the area of Woolwich Street and Eramosa Road.
Search warrants were executed at the building Thursday. An e-bike reported stolen in 2021 was located in a parking garage, while a second e-bike reported stolen last month was found inside an apartment unit. A large number of tools, credit cards and identification were also located in the apartment. The stolen property has a total estimated value of $8,000.
A 33-year-old Guelph male is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and possessing identity documents. He will appear in a Guelph court May 17, 2022.
Male arrested for impaired
A Markham male faces an impaired driving charge following a disturbance downtown early Friday.
Approximately 3:30 a.m., police were notified of a male who exited his vehicle at Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street while brandishing what appeared to be a weapon. Police observed the vehicle nearby and followed the vehicle before conducting a traffic stop on Paisley Street.
No weapon was located but while speaking to the male officers detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. After registering a fail on a roadside screening device the male was arrested and taken to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 28-year-old Markham male is charged with impaired operation. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court April 26, 2022.
