Man robbed of backpack downtown
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man reported being robbed of his backpack early Saturday morning.
Approximately 12:15 a.m. officers on foot patrol were approached by the victim. He reported he was walking through a laneway between Cork Street East and Quebec Street when he was approached by two males.
One grabbed the victim in a choke hold while the other struck him in the in the torso and legs. The two grabbed the victim’s black Swiss Army backpack and ran from the area. The backpack included a tablet and small amount of cash. The victim did not require medical attention.
One was described as a white male, approximately 20, 5’10” with a stocky build and short blonde hair and wearing a black shirt and jeans. The second was a taller white male of similar age.

Man breaks into church again
A Guelph man already facing charges for breaking into a downtown church was arrested early Saturday after doing it again.
At 1:35 a.m. Saturday officers responded to an alarm at the church and found an exterior door insecure. A male was located nearby who eventually admitted he had entered the building before fleeing when an audible alarm sounded. Investigation revealed the same male is on conditions not to attend the church after he was arrested in May for breaking into the building and stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry from the gift shop.
An 18-year-old Guelph man is further charged with another count of break and enter as well as breaching an undertaking. He was held for bail and has been released to appear in court July 5.
Arrest after security guard assaulted
A Guelph man has been arrested for assaulting a security guard at his apartment building.
The condo board of a west-end building had hired security guards to patrol common areas of the building and issue trespassing notices to individuals causing issues. This was done following repeated issues with one particular tenant.
On June 19, approximately 12:30 p.m., a security guard was attempting to deny entry to two individuals attempting to visit the tenant when the tenant twice pushed a heavy steel door into the victim’s back. The victim did not seek medical attention.
Saturday evening officers attended the tenant’s unit and placed him under arrest. A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault. He will appear in court August 2.
Two impaired arrests over weekend
Two Guelph men face impaired driving charges following separate incidents on the weekend.
Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday police received information about a possible impaired driver leaving a north-end business. Officers located the vehicle and while speaking to the driver detected a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.
Approximately 8 p.m. Sunday, police were called for a collision in a parking lot near Gordon Street and Clair Road East. While speaking to one of the involved drivers, officers detected a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. He failed a roadside test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 34-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.
Both drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were released with court dates in July.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
Four taken off road for stunt driving
Three Guelph men and one from Oakville were taken off the road for stunt driving over the weekend.
The motorists were caught driving between 41 and 55 km/h over the posted speed limits at various locations in Guelph. This included a 20-year-old Oakville man caught riding his motorcycle 105 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone on Kortright Road West just before 7 p.m. Saturday.
He and three Guelph men – aged 20, 21 and 38 – lost their licences for 30 days and had their vehicles impounded for 14 days.
A stunt driving conviction carries a minimum one-year licence suspension, minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and potential jail time.
