Foldable smartphones have been around for a few years now, but despite being a new and exciting technology, recent releases have felt iterative and somewhat boring. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Samsung’s latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, may not offer groundbreaking upgrades, but they continue to solidify Samsung’s position as the leader in foldable hardware.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 boasts a significant improvement: a larger cover display. This enhancement addresses one of the main criticisms of its predecessor, the original Flip, which had a small and less useful outer display. The Flip 3 made improvements in terms of design, display, battery life, and hardware, and the Flip 4 further refined these features. Now, with the Flip 5, users finally get the big cover display they have been waiting for.
The Galaxy Z Fold series, on the other hand, has been more iterative. While the transition from the original Fold to the Fold 2 brought significant improvements in terms of usability and durability, subsequent upgrades, such as the addition of water resistance and S Pen support, have been relatively minor. The sole difference between the Fold 4 and Fold 5 is the hinge, which feels insignificant compared to the advancements made by competitors like Google, Oppo, and Honor.
However, Samsung’s iterative approach allows them to improve on a proven formula and continue producing reliable foldable devices. That said, the introduction of real competition in the US market, with devices like the Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr+, means that Samsung will have to step up its game in the future to maintain its success. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will need significant hardware changes, and the Flip 6 should focus on improving the camera and minimizing the display crease.
While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 may not be groundbreaking, they represent an incremental step forward in foldable technology. However, as the competition grows and consumers demand more innovative features, Samsung will need to deliver more significant upgrades in the future to stay ahead of the game.
