Canada, Europe to co-host social media fundraiser for displaced Ukrainians

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – A woman working in an Alberta pizza restaurant has died after police say a pickup truck smashed into the building.

RCMP say it happened just before the lunch hour on Saturday at the Boston Pizza in Fort McMurray.

Police say the Ford F350 caused significant structural damage to the building at Franklin Ave. and Richards St.

They say one of the employees, a 24-year-old woman, was struck by the pickup and died later in hospital from her injuries.

RCMP say the driver and lone occupant of the truck remains in custody, with charges pending.

They say investigators with the RCMP and workplace safety staff will likely remain at the scene until Sunday.

REGINA – Elections Saskatchewan has finished counting all the returns from the Oct. 28 general election, with the results showing higher voter turnout than last time.

The elections management body says more than 56 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots, which is higher than the 52 per cent who voted in 2020.

Elections Saskatchewan counted the majority of the ballots last week.

On Saturday, as required by legislation 12 days after the last day of voting, the remaining mail-in ballots and those cast at hospitals and remand centres were counted.

All 61 returning offices also verified on Saturday that their results were entered correctly on election night.

The results show the Saskatchewan Party won 34 of the 61 ridings to form a majority government, while the NDP won 27 ridings to form the Official Opposition, and no third parties won a seat.

HAMILTON – Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating what it calls a “police-involved shooting” that left a man in his 30s with life-threatening injuries and a police officer with less serious wounds.

The Special Investigations Unit says Hamilton Police Service officers responded Saturday afternoon to a call from a resident of an apartment building in the Ainslie Wood West neighbourhood about a man “acting in a threatening manner” who was allegedly armed with a firearm.

In a news release, the watchdog says officers made their way to the fifth floor of the building and got involved in an altercation with the man.

The release Saturday says police exchanged gunfire with the man, which left him and an officer wounded.

In a social media post Saturday evening, the Hamilton Police Service says the man and the officer were taken to hospital, and the man’s injuries were potentially fatal.

The police watchdog says six investigators and two forensic investigators are assigned to the case.
