Canada News Media is an independent Canadian newsroom with no corporate parent. We publish daily news and explainers on politics, money, housing, health, business and sports from across the country, and we want more original reporting from people who live in the communities we cover.
If you are a journalism student, a recent graduate or an experienced freelancer looking to build your portfolio, we would like to hear from you.
What we publish
- Local news from your city, town or campus that national outlets are missing
- Explainers that answer a practical question for Canadians, with official sources
- Profiles of people, businesses and community groups doing something newsworthy
- Sports coverage, including university, junior and community sports
- Opinion columns from contributors with relevant knowledge or experience
What contributors get
- A byline and an author page with your bio and links
- Published clips for your portfolio, shared on our X, LinkedIn, Threads, Substack and Flipboard accounts
- Editing and feedback in Canadian Press style
- A reference letter after you publish regularly with us
- You keep the copyright to your work. You give Canada News Media permission to publish it and keep it online.
Contributing is voluntary and unpaid. You choose what to pitch and when, and there are no quotas or deadlines unless you agree to one for a specific story.
Students: internships and placements for credit
We host journalism students for work placements and practicums that count toward their program. Ask your program’s placement coordinator to contact us at [email protected], and we will work with your school on the learning plan, supervision and evaluation it requires.
Our standards
- Original work only. Do not submit anything published elsewhere, and do not copy other outlets.
- Write it yourself. If you used an AI tool for research or editing, tell us how.
- Name your sources and link to official documents. We confirm facts with two independent sources before publishing.
- Disclose any personal or financial connection to the people or organizations in your story.
- We follow our Editorial Policy and correct errors openly.
Paid promotional articles are a separate service. If you represent a company, see Sponsored Content & Guest Posts.
How to pitch
Email [email protected] with the subject line “Pitch:” and your story idea. Include:
- Two or three sentences on the story and why it matters now
- Who you will interview and which sources you will use
- Your city or campus, and whether you are a student and where
- One or two links to work you have published, if you have any
We reply to every pitch within a week.
