On March 13, live theatres in Calgary were shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a dark time for the arts, but there’s a tiny flicker of light coming from Calgary’s Verb Theatre.
Throughout April and briefly into May, Verb Theatre is presenting the Blue Light Festival of Social Media Theatre which unfolds on such platforms as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, What’s App, Zoom, Verb Theatre’s website and Google Docs. Everything in the festival is free to users of these social media platforms and to those who can quickly learn to access them.

The festival was conceived in the fall of 2019 before this current health crisis was even on the horizon.
“Blue Light was conceived as a simple experiment to see how theatre can be experienced both as a live art form and on a screen and the festival fit perfectly with the themes in Verb’s planned spring plays, Grounded by George Brant and Blink by Phil Porter,” says Verb’s artistic director Jamie Dunsdon.
