An outbreak of COVID-19 in Alberta may affect workers in the B.C. Interior, according to a statement released by Interior Health on Saturday.
Dr. Deena Kneeshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, reported an outbreak at the Kearl Lake oil sands project on Friday. The camp is located near Fort McMurray.

To date, 12 people connected to the work camp there have tested positive for COVID-19, and because Interior residents often work at camps such as these, IHA is warning of potential exposure.
“IH medical health officers recommend that people who are contacts or potential contacts from this site self-isolate for 14 days from their last exposure to the site or to their flights home,” the statement reads.
The health authority is advising anyone who experiences symptoms like fever or dry cough to self-isolate, and to assume the virus is present in their community.
