St. Louis Blues defenceman Logan Mailloux will miss at least eight weeks after hand surgery, one of several injury developments across the NHL on the eve of the 2026-27 season, according to NHL.com’s Sept. 28 status report.
Blues general manager Alexander Steen said Mailloux “had a great camp but that’s the game,” per the report. St. Louis also listed defenceman Tyler Tucker as week to week with a lower-body injury. The club recalled defenceman Adam Jiricek from AHL Springfield and claimed defenceman Justin Barron off waivers from the Nashville Predators.
On Long Island, forward Mathew Barzal will travel with the New York Islanders and is not ruled out for the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, NHL.com reported in its Sept. 27 report. Barzal aggravated a previous injury that caused inflammation and is listed as injured and off the active roster for now. The Islanders have not confirmed whether he will play.
The Pittsburgh Penguins face several questions. Forward Bryan Rust is being evaluated for an upper-body injury, and coach Dan Muse called him “obviously a huge part of our group,” NHL.com reported. Forward Blake Lizotte is day to day with an upper-body injury, while forwards Justin Brazeau and Ben Kindel are both week to week with lower-body injuries. Defenceman Ryan Graves is out indefinitely with problems in both knees.
The Montreal Canadiens listed forward Oliver Kapanen as day to day with a lower-body injury. Coach Martin St. Louis said forward Alex Newhook “has worked himself into a great Swiss army knife for us,” the report said.
The Minnesota Wild are evaluating defenceman Brock Faber after he was hit in the head by a puck. No timeline was given. In Buffalo, the Sabres listed goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with a lower-body tweak and goalie Alex Lyon with an upper-body injury.
The Edmonton Oilers had no items in the league’s Sept. 28 report. They open their season tonight at home against the Vancouver Canucks, the first game of a home-and-home that continues Oct. 1. The club’s website lists an 8 p.m. MT start on Sportsnet.
