Current and former Canadian Armed Forces members have until Oct. 15, 2026 to file a monetary claim under the CAF systemic racism class action settlement, according to the Department of National Defence.
With the deadline 10 days away, here is who qualifies, what is on offer and how to apply.
The settlement covers people who served in the Canadian Armed Forces between April 17, 1985 and Jan. 10, 2025 and experienced racial discrimination or racial harassment during their service, according to a Sept. 22, 2026 notice from National Defence. Claims are filed online through the claims administrator, Deloitte, at classaction.deloitte.ca/en-CA/caf-racism-class-action/. Class counsel’s information is available at forcesaction.com.
National Defence says the Oct. 15 date is the final deadline for monetary claims. The notice does not mention any exceptions for late filers, so anyone thinking of applying should not wait.
Daily Hive reports the claims deadline is 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on Oct. 15. The official notice does not specify a time of day, so claimants who are in a different time zone should file well before the end of the day.
What the money looks like
Payment amounts are where reports differ. Daily Hive reports a common experience payment of up to $5,000, with enhanced payments of $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000 depending on how an assessor rates the severity of a claim, drawn from a total settlement pool of $150 million. Other class action trackers have put the top of the range at $35,000. We could not confirm the top tier against an official source.
National Defence cautions that final dollar amounts “may be adjusted based on class size,” as set out in the final settlement agreement. In plain terms, the more people who claim, the more the payments could shrink. Anyone counting on a specific figure should treat the published amounts as estimates.
More than money
The settlement also lets claimants request a personally addressed apology letter. Participation in a Restorative Engagement program, a facilitated process run with trained practitioners, is also available. National Defence says requests for Restorative Engagement can be made later through the claims administrator, even after the monetary deadline. Questions about that program can go to the confidential email [email protected].
Why it matters for Black, Indigenous and racialized members
The class action was brought by current and former members who said racism was built into military life, from recruitment and promotion to everyday treatment in the ranks. The federal government agreed to settle, and the agreement has been approved. For many racialized veterans, including Black and Indigenous members, the claims process is the first formal route to acknowledgment and compensation for what they went through.
Filing can be hard. It asks people to describe painful experiences, sometimes from decades ago, and to do it by a fixed date. Veterans who have left the military may also not see government notices. If you know a former member who may qualify, tell them about the deadline.
What to do before Oct. 15
Start by going to the official claims website rather than a third-party page, since settlement deadlines attract copycat sites. Gather your service dates and any records that support your account. Then submit the form and keep a copy or confirmation. Questions about eligibility should go to class counsel or the claims administrator, not to unofficial social media groups.
The settlement has been in the news before. We reported on the agreement when it was announced in January 2025. This is a service update on the closing deadline, not a new development in the case itself.
