Charlottetown’s tap water has been judged the best-tasting in Atlantic Canada, with the city’s water and sewer utility winning two taste tests at a regional industry conference this month, the City of Charlottetown said.
The utility won the Best of the Best Tap Water Taste Test and the first People’s Choice Taste Test at the Atlantic Canada Water and Wastewater Association’s annual conference, held Oct. 4 to 6 in Moncton, the city said in a news release on Oct. 20.
Ten entries from utilities across Atlantic Canada were judged by a panel of water professionals on appearance, odour, taste and overall impression. It is Charlottetown’s third win in the regional competition.
The People’s Choice award was new this year. Conference attendees sampled water from participating utilities and voted for their favourite, and Charlottetown drew the most votes, making it the first community to win the category.
“These awards are a reflection of the care, dedication and expertise our staff bring to their work every day,” said Josh McInnis, the city’s manager of water and sewer utility. “We take great pride in providing Charlottetown residents with high-quality drinking water, and it’s rewarding to see those efforts recognized on a regional level.”
As the Atlantic winner, Charlottetown will compete again for the continental title at the American Water Works Association’s annual conference and exposition in San Diego next June. The city won that award in 2024, when its water was named the best-tasting tap water in North America.
Charlottetown, like the rest of Prince Edward Island, draws all of its drinking water from groundwater. Residents head to the polls on Nov. 2 in municipal elections across the Island, with advance polls running until Oct. 31, according to the city’s election page.
