Mission Institution, a medium security prison in B.C.’s Fraser Valley, is under lockdown after two inmates tested positive for COVID-19.
Correctional Service Canada says two inmates tested positive for the virus on Friday, while nine other inmates at the facility tested negative.

“CSC protocol involves medically isolating inmates who show symptoms of COVID-19, promptly isolating them from the general inmate population to prevent the spread of infection,” Jean-Paul Lorieau, a spokesman for Correctional Service Canada, said in an email statement. “We have hygiene measures in place to prevent the spread of viruses, and also cleaning, disinfecting, and proper laundry and waste disposal processes
“We have dedicated health care in our institutions with nurses and doctors on hand to monitor and assess any inmates that develop symptoms.”
However, the Union of Correctional Officers of Canada, which confirmed the lockdown on Saturday afternoon, says the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as masks and gloves, is a huge concern to its members working in the prison.
