Firefighters responded to a fire at the Halifax Grain Elevator on Marginal Road on Monday evening, the Halifax Regional Municipality said, in an incident that at its peak required a three-alarm response.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency received a 911 call at about 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 26 reporting visible flames at the property at 730 Marginal Road, according to a public service announcement issued by the municipality at 10:50 p.m.
Crews found the fire involved the facility’s dust management system, about 135 feet above ground level, the municipality said. The origin and cause have not been determined and will be investigated.
The municipality said resources on site have since been reduced as the risk decreased, but called it a complex incident because of the industrial infrastructure, the difficulty of fighting a fire at significant heights and the presence of a vessel alongside the facility.
Firefighter safety and stabilizing the incident are the department’s immediate priorities, it said. No injuries were mentioned in the announcement.
Residents are asked to avoid the area so emergency crews can work safely. Updates will be posted at halifax.ca and on the municipality’s social media channels, and residents can register for the hfxALERT notification system at halifax.ca/hfxalert.
