Jeff Knoll has been elected mayor of Oakville, Ont., and George Minakakis has been elected mayor of neighbouring Milton, according to unofficial results from Monday’s municipal election.
In Oakville, Knoll received 21,866 votes, or 36.31 per cent, according to tallies published by Oakville News and OakvilleIQ. Sean O’Meara finished second with 13,567 votes, or 22.53 per cent. Incumbent mayor Rob Burton placed third with 12,254 votes, or 20.35 per cent. Julia Hanna and Arvind Choudhary trailed.
Oakville News reported that the town will have a new mayor and six new councillors when the new term begins.
In Milton, CP24 reported that Minakakis defeated incumbent Gord Krantz. Minakakis received 45 per cent of the vote compared with 25.4 per cent for Krantz, CP24 reported. Canada News Media has only one published source for the Milton figures so far, and they should be treated as preliminary.
All of the results are unofficial until each municipal clerk declares them, which usually happens a few days after voting day.
The Halton Region results came as voters across the Greater Toronto Area chose mayors on Monday. Patrick Brown won a third term in Brampton, Alvin Tedjo won the Mississauga mayoral race, and Olivia Chow won a second term in Toronto.
Canada News Media will update this story when the clerks release official results and when a second source confirms the Milton figures.
