What: Hallowe’en-themed action for social housing
When: Saturday, October 28, 2023. Gathering at 1pm.
Where: In front of 700 Jarry West (corner of Champagneur)
One week before the Legault government presents its economic update, Parc-Extension tenants will gather for a festive, Halloween-themed action to denounce the terrifying consequences of gentrification and demand social housing as a solution.
Nearly a year after the City of Montreal acquired 700 Jarry Ouest, the site has still not been handed over to the Coopérative Monde Uni for the construction of a social housing and community space project. Due to a lack of funding from the Legault government, many sites in Parc-Extension have been left undeveloped and sit empty, like haunted houses. The impact on the neighborhood has been nightmarish- with rising evictions, unaffordable rents, and a growing number of tenants displaced from the neighborhood.
With costumes, creative actions, speeches and more, tenants will be demanding that the City of Montreal cede the site immediately to the Coopérative Monde Uni. They will also be insisting that a major investment in social housing- as soon as the next economic update- is necessary to defeat the spectre of the housing crisis in Parc-Extension.
Interviews with spokespeople will be possible prior to the beginning of the action, starting at 12:30pm.
