The B.C. Transportation Ministry is seeking public art proposals for works to be displayed at future SkyTrain stations as part of the $4-billion Surrey-Langley extension.
The B.C. Transportation Investment Corp. has issued a request-for-qualifications for up to eight artists whose work could be installed at one of the eight SkyTrain stations that’ll extend from Surrey’s King George Station, the current terminus for the Expo Line, to Langley City Centre.

The artist will have a budget of up to $250,000 for each work.
The artwork should, among the procurement document’s stated goals, demonstrate artistic merit, “delight and inspire” transit-users, respect Indigenous connection, and help develop a sense of place, community pride and identity.
It must be durable and meet TransLink’s operational, safety and maintenance requirements.
The budget includes the artist fee, studio overhead, materials, engineering costs related to the integrity of the artwork and shipping to the station or designated storage site. It doesn’t include costs for installation or installation-related permits and costs, which would be covered by the station’s builder.
The work could be 2D artwork or work that could be integrated within the station’s architecture such as replacement of wall tiles or cladding elements, 2D glass art or 3D installations. Works like painted murals or digital, video or projection art will not be considered.
Interested artists should submit their applications by Feb. 28. Shortlisted artists — up to three per station — will be required to submit a concept proposal for their work in the spring.
