Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal and goalie Michal Postava stopped all three Edmonton shooters as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Oilers 4-3 on Monday night at Rogers Place.
Dylan Larkin tied the game with 1:17 left in regulation, after Detroit pulled Postava for an extra attacker, to force overtime. Postava, making his first NHL start, then turned aside Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the shootout.
Vasily Podkolzin, Isaac Howard and Colton Dach scored for Edmonton. Viktor Arvidsson, Emmitt Finnie and Larkin scored in regulation for Detroit.
Podkolzin opened the scoring in the first period, deflecting a Draisaitl shot past Postava on a goal assisted by Draisaitl and McDavid. Arvidsson tied it 1-1 on the power play in the second, with assists to Alex DeBrincat and Raymond.
The third period was a sprint. Howard, scoring his first goal of the season, put Edmonton ahead 2-1, and Finnie tied it about 30 seconds later. Dach restored the lead with just under five minutes left when a shot from defenceman Ryan Shea was deflected in, but Larkin evened the score again late.
Postava made 25 saves in regulation and three more in the shootout, Global News reported. Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for Edmonton. Yahoo Sports reported that Postava made a point-blank stop with about seven seconds left in overtime to send the game to the shootout.
“Against this team you can’t let them get the next one,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said, according to Detroit Hockey Now. “So we responded appropriately this night.”
McDavid, who leads the NHL in scoring, has 26 assists in 12 games, which Yahoo Sports called the best start for assists in league history. It was also the first time Edmonton coach Mike Babcock faced Detroit since leaving the Red Wings.
The Oilers, 8-2-2, have lost two straight after a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. They host the Calgary Flames, who beat the Red Wings 4-1 on the weekend, on Wednesday night. The Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
