Masai Ujiri is taking the next step in his basketball journey.
He replaces Nico Harrison, who was fired in November.
Ujiri and the Raptors parted ways in June after 13 seasons, which included the 2019 NBA title.
The Raptors went 30-52 in Ujiri’s final season, missing the playoffs for the third season in a row. However, the team returned to the post-season this season with a core largely put in place by Ujiri, falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games.
Ujiri joined as the Raptors vice-president and general manager in 2013 to replace Bryan Colangelo. He helped turn the team into a consistent playoff contender, making the playoffs in seven straight seasons.
Now, he’ll head to a Mavericks team that’s endured a tumultuous year-and-a-half in the wake of Harrison’s controversial trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks have since dealt Anthony Davis, the cornerstone return in the deal, to the Washington Wizards.
However, Dallas also landed the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft, which it used to select Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, giving Ujiri a potential superstar to build around.
Ujiri, 55, spent the past season on the NBA sidelines, instead taking on an ownership role with the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo as well as an advocate position with the United Nations.
He was in Toronto as recently as last month when he was on hand for the Tempo’s court unveiling at Coca-Cola Coliseum.
