The Saskatchewan Roughriders beat the Edmonton Elks 16-9 in Regina on Saturday, Oct. 24, clinching a spot in the CFL’s West Division semifinal against the B.C. Lions.
Quarterback Tommy Stevens scored on two one-yard runs, and his second touchdown gave him 17 rushing majors this season. That broke the CFL single-season record of 16, set by Caleb Evans with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2022, according to a game report published by Prince Albert’s panow.com.
Edmonton had already locked up first place in the West before the regular-season finale and finished 13-5. Saskatchewan moved into third place in the division at 10-8.
The Elks struck first. Quarterback Cole Snyder ran in a one-yard touchdown early in the first quarter, and Edmonton led 6-0 after a missed convert. Brett Lauther cut the deficit to 6-3 with a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter. Stevens then scored from a yard out with 2:53 left in the half to give Saskatchewan a 9-6 lead at the break. That drive covered 67 yards, 62 of them coming from Edmonton penalties, including a 42-yard pass interference call against Royce Metchie.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Stevens added his second touchdown run early in the fourth to make it 15-6, though the Riders’ two-point attempt failed. Oscar Chapman then kicked a 58-yard single with 3:31 to play. Vincent Blanchard kicked a 24-yard field goal for Edmonton with 27 seconds left, and Saskatchewan recovered the Elks’ onside kick to end the game.
Wind made kicking difficult throughout the afternoon, and the report said both teams missed convert attempts. Each team was flagged seven times, Edmonton for 73 yards and Saskatchewan for 70. Shunderrick Powell led Edmonton with 47 rushing yards on six carries. Deon Jackson, making his Riders debut, ran for 45 yards on eight carries.
Saskatchewan visits the Lions on Oct. 31 in the West semifinal. The winner travels to Edmonton to face the Elks in the West final on Nov. 7. In the East, the fourth-place Winnipeg Blue Bombers cross over and will meet Toronto in the East semifinal, also on Oct. 31.
The Bombers secured their playoff berth earlier this month with a 34-10 win over the Lions. Our Grey Cup 2026 guide has the date, time and how to watch.
