Heading into this weekend, it seems uncontroversial to note that Seattle has been the consistently better team all year long.
Despite that, the Seahawks are only -1.5 point favorites.
Furthermore, according to ESPN’s computer model, Philadelphia actually has a 60.3 percent chance of winning the game.
The story of the game is injuries. The team that is best able to compensate for key players being absent will ultimately emerge victorious.
Seattle will be without seven starters heading into this one. Philly will be missing nine of their own. That combined total of 16 missing starters in a postseason match-up is the most since 1970.
Seatle will be without their top three running backs, with Chris Carson, C.J. Prosise and Rashaad Penny all out. Marshawn Lynch was brought to patch up the ground game, but the 33-year-old contributions figure to be minimal.
The Eagles, meanwhile, come into his one riding high. At one point it looked like they would miss the playoffs altogether, but four straight wins to close out the year changed that.
A lot of Philly’s success can be directly attributed to Carson Wentz peaking at just the right time. In December, the young passer recorded a 99.3 passer rating, throwing for 10 touchdowns and a single pick.
Ultimately this game will come down to which quarterback takes over the game. The Eagles have a secondary that is ripe for the scorching, if Russell Wilson has one of his trademark big days.
Then again, in the Week 12 showdown between these two squads, Philly did a solid job on Tyler Lockett and made Wilson’s job visibly more difficult.
Will the Eagles’ momentum carry them past the Seahawks on Sunday? ESPN sure seems to think so.
