Tim Stützle scored twice in the first period as the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 on Monday night, while the Winnipeg Jets scored three times in the third period to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.
Stützle opened the scoring in Boston and added a short-handed goal at 7:39 of the first, scoring twice within 1:43 after a Bruins turnover, according to NHL.com. He also had an assist and was named the game’s first star.
Drake Batherson made it 3-0 in the second period on a breakaway, and Michael Amadio, who also had an assist, added the fourth goal. James Hagens scored for Boston in the third period.
Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins. Samuel Ersson made his Senators debut in relief of Linus Ullmark in the third period, NHL.com reported.
Boston went 0-for-4 on the power play and is 0-for-10 through four games this season. Bruins captain David Pastrnak said the team’s offence comes down to confidence.
“Obviously a lot has to do with confidence. We just have to find it,” Pastrnak said.
Stützle credited the group effort. “All four lines, every single D, we played together as a group,” he said.
Boston fell to 2-2-0 with its second straight loss, according to Yahoo Sports.
In Pittsburgh, the Jets handed the Penguins their first loss of the season.
Ben Kindel gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead in the second period when he redirected a pass from Declan Carlile at the net front. The goal was initially waved off for a high stick, but a video review confirmed it, NHL.com reported.
Alex Iafallo tied the game early in the third period, converting a rebound. Adam Lowry put Winnipeg ahead 2-1, and Carlile tied it 2-2 for the Penguins.
Cole Perfetti scored the winner nine seconds later. Global News reported that all three Winnipeg goals came at five-on-five, after the Jets’ forwards had combined for none through their first two-plus games.
Clay Stevenson made 29 saves in his Jets debut. Sergei Murashov stopped 30 shots for Pittsburgh.
Winnipeg improved to 2-0-1 after beating the Detroit Red Wings a night earlier. Pittsburgh fell to 2-1-0. Perfetti has five points in his first three games.
