RALEIGH, N.C. – Logan Stankoven scored his first career NHL hat trick and the Carolina Hurricanes routed the Vancouver Canucks 7-2 on Thursday night.
Sean Walker had four assists and Andrei Svechnikov scored twice, both on the power play, as Carolina built a 3-0 lead in the first period. K’Andre Miller and Mark Jankowski also scored for the Hurricanes.
Jake DeBrusk scored both Vancouver goals, at 4:03 of the second period and 13:04 of the third. Elias Pettersson assisted on both.
Miller opened the scoring 1:18 into the game, and Svechnikov scored at 7:11 and 9:25 with the man advantage. Jankowski made it 4-0 early in the second.
DeBrusk got Vancouver on the board at 4:03 of the second, with help from Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Pettersson. Stankoven then scored short-handed at 13:13, on a play set up by Walker and Sebastian Aho, and added a power-play goal at 19:02 to make it 6-1.
Stankoven completed the hat trick at 11:36 of the third for a 7-1 lead. DeBrusk answered at 13:04, with Zeev Buium also assisting.
Carolina outshot Vancouver 34-20. Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves on 20 shots for the Hurricanes.
“Good teams like that, they make you pay,” DeBrusk said after the game, according to theScore.
NHL.com standings list Carolina at 3-1-1 and Vancouver at 2-3-0.
