Waterloo region set a record Thursday for the warmest Oct. 29, with the temperature reaching 21 C at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, Environment and Climate Change Canada said.
The reading came at 2 p.m. and was matched by the University of Waterloo weather station, CBC Kitchener-Waterloo reported. The previous record for the date was 20.8 C, set in 1989.
Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the warm weather will persist “for the next little while.” He said Saturday, Halloween, will bring a high of 13 C, with no snow expected.
“Of course it’s going to cool off pretty rapidly once the sun sets and so it won’t be 13 C when the kids are out trick-or-treating,” Kimbell said. He said the weather will still be “lovely” for young trick-or-treaters.
The forecast for the weekend and early next week calls for no rain, CBC reported.
Thursday’s mark follows an earlier October record in the region. The temperature reached 26.8 C on Oct. 13, beating the previous record of 26.5 C set in 2008.
The mild stretch comes as clocks go back an hour in Ontario this weekend. See also our earlier coverage of heat records across Ontario and Quebec and of Waterloo region’s new mayors is also available.
