White Rock RCMP are warning residents about scammers who are spoofing the detachment’s phone number and posing as police officers investigating identity theft, police said Tuesday.
The callers ask for personal information while making it appear the call is coming from the White Rock RCMP, the detachment said. So far, the people who reported the calls did not give out any information, police said.
“Scammers can make it look like they are calling from a legitimate phone number, including a police detachment,” said Staff Sgt. Rob Dixon, the White Rock RCMP detachment commander.
“If you receive a call claiming to be from police and are unsure if it is legitimate, hang up and call the detachment directly using a publicly listed phone number to verify the call,” Dixon said.
Police reminded residents not to give personal, financial or banking information over the phone unless they are certain who they are speaking with. Anyone who believes they were targeted is encouraged to report it to their local police.
