The best automatic litter box for most Canadian cat owners is the PetSafe ScoopFree at $167.68, the cheapest self-cleaning box we compared and the one with by far the most owner ratings, more than 10,000. Automatic litter boxes are a crowded, confusing market. Search Amazon.ca and most of the first page is made up of little-known brands with near-identical names and photos. We narrowed it to five boxes from brands that make the product themselves: PetSafe, PETKIT, Neakasa and CATLINK. Every pick below is sold by Amazon.ca or by the brand’s own store, and every price, size and rating was read from the live listing. We left out the best-known name in the category, the Litter-Robot 4, because on the day we checked its Amazon.ca listing was sold by a third-party seller, not by Amazon.ca or the maker.

Our picks
No. 1, best for a first automatic box: PetSafe ScoopFree Automatic Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box. This is for owners who want to stop scooping without spending $400 or more. It works differently from the others: the listing says it includes disposable trays with crystal litter, that cleanup means removing the tray and throwing it away, and that a health counter tracks how many times the box is used. It has an uncovered design. It weighs 6.03 kg. It was $167.68, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca, with 3.9 stars from 10,155 ratings and more than 100 bought in the past month.
Owners most often praise how readily their cats take to it and how well it controls odour. One reviewer with a cat that avoided regular boxes said that cat now always uses this one. The recurring complaints are about value for money, reliability and durability, and the cost of the crystals. A reviewer with three cats said the crystals were oversaturated and needed replacing about every four days. If you have more than one cat, work out the monthly cost of trays before you buy.

No. 2, best mid-price open-top box: CATLINK Open-X Self Cleaning Cat Litter Box. This suits people who want an app, a big bin and an entrance that never closes, for at least $100 less than the Neakasa M1 Plus Lite and PETKIT boxes. The listing describes a gear design that keeps the opening always open, weight sensors, infrared sensors and anti-pinch switches, a 12 L waste bin that it says holds up to 15 days of waste for one cat, and dual-band Wi-Fi. It measures 61.5 x 56.3 x 44.5 cm and weighs 13.18 kg. It was $349.99, shipped by Amazon and sold by the Purrfect CAT LINK Store, with 4.3 stars from 133 ratings, an Amazon’s Choice label and more than 200 bought in the past month.
Owners praise how well it works, how easy it is to set up and clean and the value for the money. One said it stopped as soon as their hand got close to the litter. The caution is its short record: the listing first appeared on Amazon.ca in March 2026 and has fewer than 200 ratings, so long-term durability is not yet proven.

No. 3, best for large cats: Neakasa M1 Plus Lite Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Choose this if your cat is big, shy or fussy about enclosed boxes. The listing describes a roomy 17-inch open top, automatic cleaning with app control, a pull-and-wrap bag system for the waste, and a minimum cat weight of 2.2 lb (about 1 kg). It measures 58.93 x 51.31 x 52.32 cm, weighs 10.5 kg and shows a 2-year warranty badge. It was $452.69, down 10 per cent from $502.99 in a limited-time deal, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca, with 4.1 stars from 318 ratings.
This is a newer listing, first available in October 2024, and the page did not show enough review detail for us to name a pattern in complaints. Read the most recent reviews before you buy, especially on durability, since the larger Neakasa model below has drawn more of those comments.

No. 4, best for up to three cats: Neakasa M1 Plus Open-Top Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box. This is for multi-cat homes that want an open top and a large waste bin. The listing describes a six-array rotary infrared safety system, a brush-strip seal meant to limit odour, a minimum cat weight of 3.3 lb (about 1.5 kg) and a dedicated kitten manual mode for smaller cats, support for up to three cats, an 11.2 L waste bin that it says suits 7 to 14 days of low maintenance, and a 2-year warranty badge. It was $599.99, with a $539.99 coupon price available on the page, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca, with 3.6 stars from 3,616 ratings and more than 200 bought in the past month.
Owners praise its quality, ease of use, ease of cleaning, quiet running and odour control. The star rating is held back by durability: it was the most common concern on the page, and some owners report that it broke within six months. Another said a silicone mat ripped just after a year of use, letting clean litter spill into the tray. Others mention litter building up. With a 3.6 average, it is the riskiest pick here, though 3,616 owners have rated it.

No. 5, best for odour control and a premium spend: PETKIT PuraMax 2 Self Cleaning Cat Litter Box. This is for owners who care most about keeping smells in and are willing to pay for it. Unlike the open-top boxes, it is enclosed. The listing says it works with Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) and an app, has automatic, scheduled and manual cleaning modes, and uses infrared and weight sensors, remote alerts and accident protection to keep cats safe. It says cats must weigh between 1.5 kg and 8 kg and be older than six months. The title says it includes the K3 and N50 2.0 accessories. It was $639.00, shipped by Amazon and sold by the PETKIT CA Store, with 4.1 stars from 185 ratings.
Owners praise its quality, how well it works, odour resistance, quiet running and easy cleaning. The most mentioned drawback is size, so measure the space and your cat. The 8 kg limit rules it out for larger breeds. One reviewer also reported a long wait for a refund on a faulty unit, so keep your order details and test the box as soon as it arrives.

How we chose
We searched Amazon.ca for automatic and self-cleaning litter boxes on Oct. 29, 2026 and opened the listing for every candidate. We kept boxes from named brands that sell their product through Amazon.ca or their own Amazon store, and we dropped listings sold by third-party resellers, including the Litter-Robot 4. We read each listing’s price, size, weight, safety features, star rating, review count and recent owner reviews, and we checked the brands’ own pages where we link them. We did not test these products ourselves. Picks are ranked by fit for the search, not by price or commission.

Are automatic litter boxes worth it in Canada?
They are worth it if scooping is the chore you dread, if you travel for a few days at a time, or if you share a home with a cat that is picky about cleanliness. They are less compelling if you are on a tight budget: the cheapest box here costs $167.68 before you buy replacement trays, and the open-top models cost $350 to $640. Every box still needs regular attention. The makers describe a waste bin that fills over days, not weeks, and one Neakasa owner says a full teardown clean is needed about monthly. Treat the box as a way to cut daily scooping, not to stop thinking about your cat’s bathroom.
Open-top or enclosed?
An open top, as on the Neakasa and CATLINK boxes, gives a cat a wide, visible entrance, which the Neakasa and CATLINK listings say suits large, shy or older cats that dislike cramped hoods. An enclosed box, such as the PETKIT PuraMax 2, is designed to seal in smell but takes up more room and sets a weight limit of 8 kg. Match the design to your cat’s size and temperament first. The Neakasa, CATLINK and PETKIT listings describe safety sensors that pause cleaning when a cat is detected, but you should still watch your cat use a new box for the first few days.

When is the best time to buy in Canada?
Automatic litter boxes are often discounted around Black Friday (Nov. 27 this year), Boxing Day and Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days. That is a general pattern, not a promise, and we cannot say what any price will do. The Neakasa M1 Plus Lite was already marked down 10 per cent on Oct. 29 and the Neakasa M1 Plus showed a $60 coupon, so it can pay to check the page for a coupon box before you add an item to your cart.
Who it’s for, and who should skip it
These boxes suit owners who are out a lot, have one to three adult cats of a healthy weight and have room to give the machine space. Skip them if you have a kitten under the listed minimum weight, a cat that is nervous around moving parts, or a small apartment where a 13 kg machine will not fit. Owners with several cats should also be wary of the PetSafe’s crystal costs and the Neakasa M1 Plus’s mixed durability record. If you are unsure, a standard box and a good scoop remain the safest choice.
Frequently asked questions
Do cats really use automatic litter boxes?
Most do, but not all. Owners on the PetSafe listing say their cats took to it right away, and one said a cat that had been avoiding other boxes would use only that one. Introduce any new box gradually and keep the old one nearby for a few days.
How often do you empty an automatic litter box?
It depends on the box and the number of cats. The CATLINK listing says its 12 L bin holds up to 15 days of waste for one cat, and Neakasa says the M1 Plus bin suits 7 to 14 days. With several cats, expect to empty it more often.
What is the cheapest automatic litter box on Amazon.ca?
Of the brand-sold boxes we compared, the PetSafe ScoopFree at $167.68 on Oct. 29, 2026. Lower-priced boxes from unfamiliar brands appear in the search results, but we did not include them.
Are automatic litter boxes safe for kittens?
Check the minimum weight on each listing. The Neakasa M1 Plus Lite lists a minimum of about 1 kg, the Neakasa M1 Plus has a kitten manual mode for cats under about 1.5 kg and PETKIT says its box is not for pets under six months. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
Do I need Wi-Fi for an automatic litter box?
Not for the PetSafe ScoopFree, which has no app. The CATLINK, Neakasa and PETKIT boxes use an app, and the PETKIT listing says it connects on a 2.4 GHz network, so check your router before you buy.
