Cold snaps are already here across much of the country, and a base layer is the cheapest way to stay warmer on a walk to the bus stop, a shift outdoors or a day on the hill. Amazon.ca has hundreds of thermal underwear sets. We looked at five men’s sets that show strong ratings and large review counts on their listings, from fleece-lined polyester sets near $30 to a merino wool set above $125. Prices and ratings below were shown on Amazon.ca on Oct. 28, 2026, and may change.

Danish Endurance merino wool base layer set
This is the premium pick. Merino wool is a natural fibre that outdoor shoppers often choose because it tends to stay warm and resist odour, and this set is priced accordingly. The listing showed a limited-time markdown from a higher list price and a Safer chemicals label.
- Price: $127.46 on Oct. 28, marked down from $144.95 to $149.95 depending on the option
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 from 1,729 ratings
- Listed as a merino wool top and bottom set for men
Best for: long days outdoors, such as skiing or winter hiking, and for anyone who finds synthetic fabrics clammy. It costs about four times as much as the budget sets.

How to pick a base layer
A base layer works best when it sits close to the skin and is topped by a mid layer and a windproof shell. Cotton holds sweat and can leave you colder, so check the fabric on the listing. For a quiet day in town, a fleece-lined set is usually enough. For skiing, snowshoeing or other hard effort, look for a thinner moisture-wicking or merino set that will not overheat you. Pair it with warm feet and hands: see our guides to merino wool socks and touchscreen winter gloves.

How we chose
We searched Amazon.ca for men’s thermal base layer sets and kept five listings with ratings of 4.4 or higher and at least 600 ratings. We recorded prices, ratings and review counts from the listings and did not test the products. Written review text was not readable on the listings, so we do not summarize complaints; read the recent reviews and size chart before you buy. Several of these sets are sold by third-party sellers. Prices may change.
