An inquest will be held into the death of Jessie Mayhew, a 27-year-old man who died in hospital after being transferred from the Sudbury Jail, Ontario’s coroner’s office announced Wednesday.
Mayhew died on Feb. 11, 2022, according to a news release from the Ministry of the Solicitor General. Dr. Laura Piccinin, the regional supervising coroner for the North Region at the Sudbury office, announced the inquest.
An inquest is mandatory under Ontario’s Coroners Act in his case, the release said.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mayhew’s death, and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths. Inquest juries do not make findings of legal responsibility.
The coroner’s office said further details, including the date and venue, will be announced later. More information on how inquests work is available on the Government of Ontario’s coroner’s inquests page.
