MILWAUKEE: The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Friday night in Game 1 of the World Series, surviving a ninth-inning scare at American Family Field.
Christian Yelich hit a one-out triple in the first inning to score Jackson Chourio, and William Contreras followed with a single that deflected off Rays shortstop Taylor Walls and let Yelich score, NBC News reported. Milwaukee led 2-0 after one inning.
Tampa Bay answered in the fourth. Jonathan Aranda walked, moved to third on Junior Caminero’s double and scored on a grounder to the right side. Cooper Pratt drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and scored from second on Chourio’s two-out single, giving the Brewers a 3-1 lead.
Jacob Misiorowski got the win, allowing one run over five innings. NBC News reported that he opened the game with a 103.5 mph pitch to Yandy Diaz, the fastest pitch ever thrown in a World Series game. Nick Martinez struck out five and allowed two runs over five innings for Tampa Bay.
The Rays made it tense in the ninth. Liam Hicks grounded into what was first ruled a game-ending double play, but video review overturned the call because Pratt’s right foot was slightly off the bag when he caught Brice Turang’s high throw. Hicks was still out at first, but the Rays had runners in scoring position with the Brewers ahead by a run. Closer Trevor Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca to end the game.
Tampa Bay went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Brewers lead the best-of-seven series 1-0. NBC News noted that the Game 1 winner has gone on to win the World Series 62.8 per cent of the time, and that this is the first World Series since 1980 featuring two potential first-time champions.
Game 2 pits Rays starter Drew Rasmussen against Brewers starter Logan Henderson, according to a preview. Our World Series opener preview has the schedule and pitching matchups.
