What does the Dyson V15 Detect do differently?
Three features set the V15 apart from cheaper Dyson sticks. The Fluffy Optic cleaner head throws an angled green light across hard floors, which Dyson says reveals twice the invisible dust of its earlier laser head. A piezo sensor sizes and counts particles as they are sucked up, and in Auto mode the machine raises or lowers power based on how much dust it detects.
The second head, the Digital Motorbar, is built for carpets and has vanes that clear hair from the brush bar as it spins. Dyson says its DLS system checks brush bar resistance 360 times a second to adapt power between floor types. An LCD screen on the body shows the power mode, a run-time countdown to the second, a count of particles picked up and maintenance alerts.
Dyson’s own comparison chart on the listing shows what you give up by stepping down. The V11 Origin keeps the 60-minute run time but drops dust detection and the light. The V8 models fall to 40 minutes and lose both.
Is the Dyson V15 Detect worth it?
For the right home, the case is strong. You get two specialized cleaner heads, a 60-minute run time that matches the best in Dyson’s comparison chart on the listing, sealed HEPA filtration that Dyson says traps 99.99 per cent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, and features that make it obvious where you still need to clean. Several Canadian owners on the listing said it replaced their canister or central vacuum for daily use.
At $999.99, though, you are paying a premium of about $450 over a strong rival and roughly $720 over a well-rated budget stick. If your home is mostly carpet, the light, which only works on the Fluffy Optic head on hard floors, adds less value. The verdict: worth it for pet owners and allergy sufferers with lots of hard flooring who vacuum often. Less compelling for small, carpeted spaces.

What do owners say?
The rating breakdown on Amazon.ca is lopsided: 76 per cent of ratings are five stars and nine per cent are one star. Amazon’s review summary says buyers most often praise performance, dust removal and suction, while value for money, weight, battery life and durability draw mixed comments.
In reviews from Canada, one owner with two dogs and three cats said the soft roller picked up cat litter that older stick vacuums scattered, and that the light, which she expected to be a gimmick, showed dust on floors she thought were clean. Another upgrading from a six-year-old V10 said the extra power was most noticeable on carpet. A third said the carpet head felt as strong as the turbo head on her central vacuum.
The complaints are consistent too. One reviewer said the machine cut out on area rugs unless it was switched to Eco mode. Others noted it is heavier than a V8. Reviewers outside Canada said holding the trigger the whole time tires the hand and that the bin seal can be fiddly to close. The most-upvoted critical review from Canada described a unit that began shutting off after about a year and a frustrating warranty replacement process with Dyson.
Dyson V15 Detect vs Shark PowerDetect
The closest rival on Amazon.ca is the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum (IP1255), sold by Amazon.ca for $549.99 as of Oct. 22, 2026, with a 4.0 out of 5 star rating from 260 ratings. Shark says its DuoClean Detect nozzle uses two brushrolls for all floors and that the vacuum uses four detection technologies to react to hidden dirt, edges and corners, carpet versus hard floor and cleaning direction. It also has a headlight and HEPA filtration.
The Dyson wins on run time claims, the particle-counting display and its dedicated soft roller for hard floors. The Shark costs about $450 less and uses one all-floor head instead of two. The listing weight for the Shark is 3.61 kg, heavier than the 2.74 kg shown for the Dyson. Shoppers who mainly want strong debris pickup and a light for less money should look closely at the Shark.

Who should skip the Dyson V15 Detect?
Skip it if you live in a small, mostly carpeted apartment, where the green light does little and a cheaper stick will do the job. Skip it if you need deep cleaning on thick, high-pile carpet every day, since some owners found the carpet head hard to push there. And think twice if wrist or hand strain is a concern, because the trigger has to be held down to run and several owners mentioned the weight.
If you want a mop as well, Dyson’s chart on the listing shows the V15s Detect Submarine adds a wet roller head, at a higher weight of 8.3 lb.
Is there a cheaper alternative?
The Levoit VortexIQ Cordless Vacuum sold for $279.70 on Amazon.ca on Oct. 22, 2026, down from a listed $299.99, and is sold by Amazon.ca. It shows a 4.3 out of 5 star rating from 14,418 ratings and more than 600 bought in the past month. Levoit lists a 50-minute run time, its own green dust-reveal light, an anti-tangle brush and five-stage HEPA filtration, and says suction is aimed at hard floors and low-pile carpet. It lacks Dyson’s particle sensor and second cleaner head, but it costs less than a third as much.
