Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 in the League Cup on Thursday night, scoring three times before Dan Burn pulled one back for the visitors late in the game.
James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner, set up by Hayden Hackney, according to ESPN’s match log. Hackney doubled the lead on the stroke of halftime, finishing into the bottom left corner after a fast break and a cross from Thierno Barry.
Barry made it 3-0 in the 69th minute, sending a right-footed shot into the top right corner from the centre of the box. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall supplied the pass on another counter-attack.
Newcastle replied in the 88th minute when Burn headed in from close range, meeting a cross from Joe Willock. The goal came too late to change the result. ESPN and Sky Sports both list the final score as Everton 3, Newcastle 1.
The game was played at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, the club’s new home on the Liverpool waterfront. The scorers and minutes are taken from ESPN’s match log, and the score has been confirmed by Sky Sports.
Newcastle had won 2-0 at Crystal Palace on Oct. 26, with goals from Osula and Barnes, in a game reported by Canada News Media. The League Cup defeat leaves the club out of the competition.
The result was one of several cup ties settled this week. On Wednesday, Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and Fleetwood Town knocked out Arsenal on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Everton’s next fixture was not confirmed by either source at the time of publication.
