Liverpool edged Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday night, booking a Carabao Cup quarter-finals meeting with Bournemouth.
Both goals came from the penalty spot in the first half. Referee Darren England awarded Chelsea a penalty in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo in the box, and Morgan Rogers sent Giorgi Mamardashvili the wrong way from 12 yards.
Chelsea’s lead lasted three minutes. Wesley Fofana handled the ball in the box, and Cody Gakpo stepped up in the 43rd minute to beat Mike Penders for his 11th goal in the competition, BBC Sport reported.
There was no extra time in the fourth round, so the tie went straight to penalties after a second half in which neither side could find a winner. Marco Palestra forced a fine save from Mamardashvili for Chelsea, and Liverpool pushed for a second goal but could not take their chances.
In the shootout, Penders saved Gravenberch’s attempt, and Mamardashvili kept out Emmanuel Emegha’s effort. Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool, and Fofana skied his spot-kick over the bar, which proved decisive. It was Liverpool’s fifth straight success on penalties against Chelsea.
The night carried extra interest because Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso and midfielder Jordan Henderson, both former Liverpool figures, were back at Anfield. Henderson was greeted by a chorus of boos when he picked up the ball before the penalty.
The win extends Liverpool’s run after a 2-0 victory over Brighton at the weekend, a game covered in our report on Wirtz and Isak. It also gives manager Andoni Iraola a chance to match Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, who both reached the final of this competition in their first season in charge.
Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham in the league earlier this month, as told in our story on that match. Liverpool will host Bournemouth, who beat Manchester United 3-0 in the league, a result covered in our Old Trafford report, in the next round.
Fleetwood Town, from League Two, also won through on penalties against Arsenal, as we reported in our story on the biggest upset of the round.
