Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, Oct. 25, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson leaving United winless in eight games and 16th in the Premier League.
Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, arriving at the far post to finish a free-kick from Justin Kluivert. The set piece was conceded when Ayden Heaven lunged in on a Bournemouth attacker. Tavernier made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute after Leny Yoro slipped, and Bournemouth went into half-time with a two-goal lead.
Evanilson added the third in the 71st minute, beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens to the ball. He also had a goal ruled out, and Bournemouth created further chances before the final whistle.
United manager Michael Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench, according to Sky Sports. At half-time Carrick sent on Matheus Cunha in place of Youri Tielemans, and later brought on Lisandro Martínez, Joshua Zirkzee, Ryan Christie, Shea Lacey, Amine Adli, Bafode Diakité and Eli Junior Kroupi. Five United players were cautioned, including Heaven, Tielemans and Harry Maguire, while Andrey Santos and Tyler Adams were booked for Bournemouth. Referee Jarred Gillett showed no red cards.
“It was a tough day for the players,” Carrick said. He said he will “always do what’s best for this football club” and that he does not know what comes next.
Bournemouth manager Marco Rose said he felt “a lot of empathy” for Carrick and said his side played with bravery. Rose’s team has won back-to-back league games and four straight in all competitions, a run that includes a 3-0 Europa League win over 10-man AC Milan on Oct. 22. Bournemouth beat AC Milan in that match.
Supporters booed the players at Old Trafford and directed their anger at the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox, Sky Sports reported. Sky pundit Gary Neville said the club is a mess and that the owners, the sporting department and the players have all let the club down.
The result extends a poor week for United, who were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League on Oct. 22. Our report on Como’s win over United has the details of that match.
At the top of the table, Manchester City and Arsenal were level on 21 points after eight games, ahead of Brighton on 16 and Liverpool on 15, according to Football Web Pages. Liverpool kept pace on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Brighton, and Tottenham won 2-0 at Chelsea a day earlier, a match covered in our report on Tottenham’s win at Chelsea.
United, one point above the relegation zone, will look to end the run when the Premier League returns.
