Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, scoring once through an own goal by goalkeeper Mike Penders and again through Mathys Tel late on, after Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was sent off.
The Premier League match was goalless until the 77th minute. Penders, making his first league start for Chelsea, tried to punch away a corner from Mateus Fernandes and the ball ended up in his own net.
Palmer was then shown a second yellow card and dismissed, leaving Chelsea with 10 men. Tel made the result safe late in the game, running through midfield and beating Penders with a shot from outside the area.
Tottenham had 15 shots to Chelsea’s seven, according to The Analyst, and Chelsea managed fewer attempts than in any other league game this season. Reports differed on the details of the sending-off, and neither NBC Sports nor The Analyst gave the minute.
The match was tense from the opening stages. NBC Sports reported an early scuffle involving players and both benches that produced several yellow cards. Tottenham’s James Maddison went off injured in the 51st minute and was replaced by Conor Gallagher. Fernandes, who delivered the corner that led to the opener, was named man of the match.
Chelsea started the day fourth in the table and stay there with 13 points from eight games, according to NBC Sports. Tottenham climbed to 12th with nine points, ahead of Hull City on goal difference.
Chelsea go to Liverpool in the League Cup on Wednesday, NBC Sports reported, and then host Manchester United in the league on Oct. 31. Tottenham host Crystal Palace the same day.
It was one of several Premier League results on Saturday. Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 and Aston Villa came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1.
