Drivers on two of Halifax’s busiest peninsula corridors will see new lane rules starting Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the municipality and Link Nova Scotia roll out quick, low-cost fixes meant to cut delays.
At Connaught Avenue and Quinpool Road, northbound drivers on Connaught will get two dedicated left-turn lanes, the Halifax Regional Municipality said in a public service announcement Wednesday. The existing left-turn lane and the shared left-turn and through lane become two left-turn-only lanes, the through lane stays as it is, and the right-turn lane becomes a shared through and right-turn lane. Southbound, the left-turn and through lanes are unchanged, while the right-turn lane also becomes a shared through and right-turn lane.
The city said the change adds capacity for left-turning vehicles and better matches how traffic actually uses the intersection.
At Oxford Street and Jubilee Road, drivers travelling east and west on Jubilee will no longer be allowed to turn left onto Oxford Street during the afternoon rush, the municipality said in a separate announcement Tuesday. New signs will show when the restriction applies. The city said left-turning vehicles waiting in a shared lane cause delays there, and that removing those turns also makes crossing safer for people walking and rolling. Drivers who need Oxford Street during the restricted period are asked to follow the posted signs and use other routes.
Both changes are part of a series of targeted transportation upgrades the municipality is carrying out with Link Nova Scotia, the province’s regional transportation agency. The city describes them as practical, cost-effective improvements that can be done faster than major construction, aimed at reducing delays and making travel times more reliable on key corridors while larger projects move ahead. More details are on Link Nova Scotia’s targeted transportation improvements page.
