Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Fort McMurray area and the rest of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeastern Alberta, with 10 to 15 centimetres of snow expected as rain changes to heavy snow on Friday afternoon.
The agency said the heavy snow will continue through Friday night and Saturday before gradually tapering off Saturday evening. The warning covers Fort McMurray and Anzac, as well as Fort McKay, Fort Chipewyan and other communities across the municipality, along with parts of Wood Buffalo National Park, according to Environment Canada’s public alerts.
“Travel will likely be challenging. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the warning said. The agency advised people to allow extra time for travel.
The same storm system brought wet snow and strong wind to Calgary on Friday morning, and it is dropping much heavier snow on the north, including up to 40 centimetres in far northern Saskatchewan. Drivers heading out of Fort McMurray can check road conditions on 511 Alberta. For tips on preparing a vehicle, see our guide to building a winter car emergency kit.
