Keanin Loomis, a former head of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, was elected mayor of Hamilton on Monday night, and incumbent Andrea Horwath finished a distant third, according to unofficial results.
With 193 of 267 tabulators reporting at 11:22 p.m. ET, Loomis had 58,322 votes, or 41.6 per cent, in unofficial results from the City of Hamilton. Coun. Rob Cooper was second with 45,069 votes (32.1 per cent) and Horwath third with 20,253 votes (14.4 per cent). Scarlett Gillespie had 9,294 votes (6.6 per cent).
CTV News projected Loomis as the winner, and CHCH also reported that he had been elected. CHCH noted that Loomis was the runner-up in 2022, when he lost to Horwath by fewer than 2,000 votes.
CHCH reported that incumbents Matt Francis in Ward 5 and Tom Jackson in Ward 6 were re-elected as council results began to arrive. Most wards were still to be declared when this story was published.
The figures are unofficial and will change as the remaining tabulators report. This story will be updated with final counts and turnout.
Horwath, a former Ontario NDP leader, was elected mayor in 2022. For background, see our Hamilton voting guide and the report on advance voting topping 2022, as well as Olivia Chow’s win in Toronto.
