The City of Kitchener is adding three outdoor neighbourhood rinks this winter, bringing its total to nearly 30, and is asking residents to volunteer to run them.
The city said in an Oct. 19 release that the new rinks are planned for Eden Oak Park at 125 Eden Oak Trail, Tremaine Park at 14 William Lewis St. and Greengable Park at 55 Greengable Way. It said it also needs coordinators at select existing neighbourhood rinks.
Winter rink coordinators lead a team of local volunteers and act as the main contact between the rink and the city. The role includes overseeing daily operations, helping with ice flooding, snow removal and maintenance, managing supplies and funds, and passing updates between the city and volunteers.
Coordinators must be 18 or older and live in the neighbourhood of the rink. The city said they should be comfortable working independently outdoors, able to do physical tasks such as lifting and bending, and available early in the morning or late at night when needed.
Residents who cannot take on the coordinator role can apply as general volunteers. The city said extra support would be especially helpful at Greengable Park.
Applications are made through online forms linked from LoveMyHood.ca/outdoorrinks, where residents can also see rink locations. Questions can go to [email protected] or 519-741-2663. The release does not give an application deadline.
The announcement comes as Kitchener residents prepare to vote in the municipal election on Oct. 26. Our K-W voting guide has hours, ID rules and ward information.
