MONTREAL – Nashville SC beat CF Montréal 2-0 at Stade Saputo on Saturday afternoon, a result that eliminated the home side from playoff contention, The Canadian Press reported.
Sam Surridge scored in the 51st minute with a header, finishing a deflected cross from Reed Baker-Whiting. Nashville added a second in the 76th minute. The official match data from ESPN and the BBC records it as an own goal by Montréal’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Samsy Keita, while The Canadian Press credited Hany Mukhtar with the finish after a giveaway from Bryan Vera.
Keita made his MLS debut in the match. Montréal had rotated heavily from the side that played in the Canadian Championship final and brought back Dante Sealy from injury, and the hosts controlled long spells of the first half without breaking through.
Nashville, the top team in Major League Soccer, picked up the Supporters’ Shield with the win, the first in the club’s history, The Canadian Press reported. The trophy goes to the league’s best regular-season team.
The defeat came three days after Montréal lost the Canadian Championship final to Forge FC on penalty kicks, making Forge the first Canadian Premier League club to win the title. Montréal was held to a 1-1 draw by the Sounders the previous weekend, and went into Saturday’s game at the bottom of the standings.
The match was broadcast on Apple TV.
