Victor Osimhen scored twice as Galatasaray beat Fenerbahce 2-1 in the Istanbul derby on Monday night, returning to the top of the Turkish Super Lig and opening a six-point gap on their city rivals.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 29th minute, set up by Baris Yilmaz, according to Goal. He struck again in the 44th minute at RAMS Park, Anadolu Agency reported, heading in after Davinson Sanchez’s first-time effort was redirected. The move followed a long throw-in by Ismail Jakobs. Goal said the header beat Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson.
Fenerbahce pulled one back in the 62nd minute through Irfan Can Kahveci, who finished with an acrobatic bicycle kick. Goal said it came after a loose touch in the Galatasaray area. The visitors could not find an equalizer.
Osimhen had a second-half goal ruled out for offside that would have given him a hat trick, Goal reported. Jakobs also hit the post with a header for Galatasaray.
The result lifted Galatasaray to 22 points from nine matches, Anadolu Agency said. Fenerbahce dropped to fifth with 16 points, which Goal described as a six-point deficit to Galatasaray.
The derby came a few days after both clubs were in Champions League action. Galatasaray beat Lille 4-2 on Oct. 21, while Fenerbahce drew 2-2 at home against Slavia Praha on Oct. 20, according to UEFA’s list of matchday 3 results. Canada’s Jonathan David was the scorer in a 2024 qualifier that stopped Fenerbahce from reaching the Champions League.
Galatasaray’s next league match is at Konyaspor on Oct. 30, Goal said. Fenerbahce host Goztepe the following day, on Oct. 31. In the Champions League, both clubs are back in action on Nov. 3 and 4 as matchday 4 begins, with Galatasaray hosting Stuttgart and Fenerbahce hosting Liverpool, based on UEFA’s fixture list.
Liverpool, for their part, arrive after a 4-3 win over Villarreal in matchday 3, a game in which Canadian striker Tani Oluwaseyi scored for Villarreal.
