Vancouver answered in the second. Max Sasson scored at 7:52, and Brock Boeser tied it 2-2 on the power play at 18:55, with assists to Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek.
Palmieri scored the winner at 5:38 of the third, with Maccelli and Schaefer assisting. The goal came after Palmieri had gone five games without a point.
Leevi Merilainen made 35 saves in the loss for Vancouver. Ilya Sorokin earned his 157th career win for the Islanders, tying Glenn “Chico” Resch for second place on the franchise list.
Schaefer had two assists and has six points in six games. Horvat, who assisted on the opening goal, extended his point streak to six games, his longest to start a season. Kessel played his 100th NHL game and earned his first point as an Islander.
“(It) felt good to contribute,” Palmieri said.
Islanders coach Pete DeBoer said Maccelli, who started the game on the fourth line, “was buzzing.”
New York improved to 3-3-0. The Islanders visit the Ottawa Senators on Thursday at Canadian Tire Centre.
