A new study finds that cold-water trenches off B.C.’s central coast could be a marine refuge for critically endangered sunflower sea stars. Lead author of the study, Alyssa Gehman, says a wasting disease has wiped out more than 90 per cent of the starfish on the North American coast since 2013, but the deep, cold fjords may serve as a refuge from disease.(April 2, 2025)
