The new NFL season is well underway, having got off to a promising start for some teams, and a disappointing one for others. While teams such as the Baltimore Ravens have been forced to battle against injury and a lack of stand-out wide receivers, the Philadelphia Eagles reign undefeated and the Dallas Cowboys have been making steady progress.
When it comes to the question of predicting who will be the victors, however, it looks like the Buffalo Bills are in prime position to pick up the Super Bowl trophy – and it’s not just the fans who think so.
Former MVP and acclaimed wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, recently weighed in on his top contenders for this season. Perhaps unsurprisingly, foremost among them is one of his own former teams – the Pittsburgh Steelers, However, Holmes’ praise for the Buffalo Bills was also particularly effusive, as he expressed his view that they would finish in the top five.
Will the odds-on favourites win the day?
While the Buffalo Bills are firm favorites with bettors, if you take a cursory glance at the NFL odds, there are several other teams breathing down their necks.
Among them, eager followers of the NFL will find the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Green Bay Packers, although the latter may have been shaken of course by their latest defeat at the hands of the New York Giants.
Meanwhile, languishing at the bottom of the betting table, you will find the Houston Texans, the Seattle Seahawks, and the New York Jets, another former team of Holmes. While the Jets may not be ranking highly this season, they continue to forge onward, most recently putting in an impressive performance against the Miami Dolphins.
Who will be this year’s MVP?
In 2021, Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, was notably named MVP – for the fourth time. Rodgers was previously awarded the title in 2011, 2014, and 2020, and was presented with his most recent trophy by none other than Peyton Manning – the only man to have been named MVP more times than Rodgers, with five accolades to his belt.
It remains to be seen if Rodgers can manage to scoop the award for the fifth time and level up with Manning.
So far, bettors seem to be favoring Josh Allen, with Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurts not too far behind, and Rodgers taking 8th spot in the rankings.
Allen is undeniably impressive, having proven himself to be an outstanding young quarterback over the course of the last three years. Noted for his exceptional accuracy and his ability to get the ball out, if Allen keeps up his momentum for the rest of the season it seems the MVP award is almost certain to have his name on it. With such a star player on their team, it’s perhaps not surprising that the Buffalo Bills are having such a great season.
Of course, nothing is set in stone, but the way the season is progressing, it seems possible that the Bills could have the Super Bowl within their grasp – and Allen could receive his first MVP accolade.
