Alex Tuch scored twice in his first game with the Washington Capitals as they beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Friday night, according to ESPN.
Tuch, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in a sign-and-trade in June, scored at 6:33 and 14:23 of the first period. Cole Hutson added a goal at 11:33 as Washington built a 3-0 lead after one, ESPN reported.
Jakob Chychrun scored on the power play and Ryan Leonard added another in the second period. Sebastian Aho, on the power play, and Logan Stankoven replied for Carolina.
Final: Capitals 5, Hurricanes 2. Logan Thompson made 31 saves for Washington. Alex Ovechkin picked up an assist in his 22nd NHL season opener, according to ESPN.
Garand blanks Red Wings
Dylan Garand made 23 saves for his first career NHL shutout as the New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 in Detroit’s season opener, according to ESPN. Sean Durzi scored on the power play at 5:12 of the first period, and Eeli Tolvanen added an empty-net goal at 18:44 of the third. It was the Rangers’ second win in as many nights after a 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Thursday.

The Winnipeg Jets, the only Canadian team in action Friday, were hosting the Boston Bruins at press time. The St. Louis Blues visit the Dallas Stars at 7 p.m. MT, and the Anaheim Ducks play the Vegas Golden Knights at 8 p.m. MT, according to the NHL schedule as published by DRG News.
