Volkswagen is recalling nearly 35,300 vehicles in Canada over a steering component that can corrode and break, part of a global action covering about 2.86 million vehicles, according to Canadian Press reporting published Sept. 28, 2026.
The Canadian recall covers 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan and Atlas models, CP reported. Transport Canada’s recall notice (No. 2026439), first published Sept. 11 and last updated Sept. 17, also lists 2019 to 2021 Audi Q3 vehicles. The notice says one of the bolts that attaches the steering rack to the subframe “could corrode and break,” which could damage the steering rack housing and cause a loss of steering control and a risk of a crash.
Volkswagen Canada reports no known accidents or injuries linked to the defect, according to CP. Germany’s motor vehicle agency, the KBA, has likewise said it knows of no injuries or property damage.
The company attributes the problem to road de-icing salt and certain environmental conditions, according to CP24. That matters for a country where salt is spread on roads for much of the year. Corrosion is a known ageing problem for vehicles in Canada, and the recalled models are now several years old, which is when salt damage tends to show up.
What owners are being told
The fix is a replacement right-side steering rack mounting bolt, installed by a dealer at no cost, according to Transport Canada. Volkswagen spokesperson Thomas Tetzlaff said the company “will notify all owners of affected vehicles once a repair is available to schedule an appointment with an authorized dealer who will, at no cost to owners, conduct any necessary repairs.”
The wording differs slightly between sources. Transport Canada says owners will be notified by mail. The company’s CP statement says notification will come once a repair is available. In the United States, where 208,724 vehicles are covered under NHTSA campaign 26V590, owner letters are scheduled for Nov. 10, according to U.S. reports. No matching Canadian mailing date has been published in the sources reviewed for this article.
Owners do not have to wait for a letter to check. Vehicle identification numbers can be searched on Transport Canada’s recall database and on Volkswagen Canada’s recalls page.
The bigger picture
The scale of the global recall is far larger than the risk in any one vehicle. Industry reports based on U.S. filings say Volkswagen estimates only about 1 per cent of recalled vehicles actually have the defect, but every vehicle in scope gets the fix because affected units cannot be identified in advance. The same reports say the first failure was reported outside North America in October 2024 and a second in August 2025, and that no failures or injuries have been documented in North America.
Those figures come from secondary reporting on the U.S. filing and should be read as such. The U.S. numbers break down as 85,713 Tiguans, 82,601 Atlas SUVs and 40,410 Audi Q3 vehicles, according to one summary of the NHTSA notice. A Canadian breakdown by model was not available.
The recall also lands at an awkward moment for the automaker. Volkswagen cut its 2026 profit guidance on Sept. 18, according to financial reporting, and repair costs of several hundred euros per vehicle have been estimated by analysts, though Volkswagen has not confirmed a total.
Open questions
Several things remain unclear for Canadian owners. The first is timing: CP’s account suggests the repair is not yet ready, while the Transport Canada notice describes the remedy as a bolt replacement. The second is scope: CP names only Tiguan and Atlas for Canada, while the government notice also lists the Audi Q3, and the Canadian count for each model has not been published. The third is whether vehicles in the salt-heavy provinces face higher risk than those elsewhere. Neither Volkswagen nor regulators have said.
Until those answers arrive, owners of a 2018 Tiguan or Atlas, or a 2019 to 2021 Audi Q3, should check their VIN and book service when the dealer is ready. Anyone who notices unusual steering play, noise or vibration should have the vehicle inspected right away.
