The best way to prepare your lawn for winter in Canada is to clear the leaves, keep mowing until growth stops, aerate or dethatch, overseed thin patches and apply a fall fertilizer, all before the ground freezes. Doing the work now helps grass roots survive the cold and gives the lawn a head start when it greens up in spring.
Fall is one of the most useful times of year to work on turf. Soil is still warm, nights are cool and moisture is more reliable than in midsummer, which suits root growth. Home improvement retailers and lawn-care suppliers that publish Canadian guidance, including Home Depot Canada and STIHL Canada, agree on the broad approach, though timing and grass height vary by region and grass type. Check your local frost dates and the label on any seed or fertilizer you buy.
None of the work below involves ladders, electrical or gas systems. Use gloves, eye protection and hearing protection when running a mower or blower, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any equipment.
- Rake or mulch the leaves. Remove fallen leaves and twigs so they do not smother the grass over winter. STIHL Canada advises clearing leaves by mid-November at the latest. Home Depot Canada notes you can also use a mulching mower to chop leaves into the lawn.
- Keep mowing at a steady height. Home Depot Canada recommends mowing to about 2.5 inches (roughly 6.5 cm) and leaving the clippings on the lawn, which it says returns about 25 per cent of the nitrogen the grass needs. STIHL Canada suggests a final cut of about 5 cm (higher in shaded areas) on a dry day before the first frost, and removing clippings after that last cut. The two sources differ, so pick a height that suits your grass type and stay consistent.
- Dethatch or aerate. Home Depot Canada recommends dethatching or aerating to open pathways for nutrients, air and water to reach the roots. If you cannot dethatch, it suggests spreading less than a quarter of an inch of enriched soil. STIHL Canada advises against scarifying (heavy dethatching) late in fall, and says to wait for spring or early fall while soil is still warm.
- Overseed bare or thin areas. STIHL Canada says overseeding should happen in September while the soil is warm. Choose a seed suited to your site, such as shade-tolerant or traffic-resistant varieties, and follow the application rate on the bag. Home Depot Canada suggests cutting the grass slightly shorter than normal the day before seeding. If it is already late in the season where you live, seed may not establish before frost, so consider waiting until spring.
- Water new seed. Home Depot Canada says to keep the top inch of soil constantly moist on newly seeded areas, which means watering daily until the seed germinates. Established lawns generally need far less.
- Apply a fall fertilizer. Use a product labelled for fall or winter care and follow the rate on the package. STIHL Canada recommends a potassium-rich autumn fertilizer applied from mid-October to early November, after the final mowing, once temperatures are consistently low. Home Depot Canada recommends applying fertilizer right after seeding so it feeds both the existing lawn and new seedlings. Keep fertilizer off driveways and sidewalks, and never apply it to frozen ground or just before heavy rain.
- Service your mower. STIHL Canada advises emptying the fuel tank, checking the oil, cleaning the machine, sharpening the blade and storing it in a dry place. If you are unsure how to drain fuel safely, take the mower to a small-engine repair shop.
Weather in Canada varies widely, from Vancouver’s mild, wet autumns to Prairie freezes that arrive in early October, so treat the dates above as guides and adjust to local conditions. A lawn that is cleared of leaves, cut at a sensible height, fed and lightly seeded going into winter is far better placed to recover in spring.
