York Street between Wellington Street and Colborne Street in downtown London has reopened to vehicle traffic, the City of London said on Oct. 19.
The York Street Infrastructure Renewal Project is nearing completion. The city said the work upgraded underground utilities and increased water, stormwater and sewer capacity to support future growth downtown.
Crews removed old combined sewers and separated stormwater from wastewater, and replaced the watermain. The road, sidewalk and intersection were rebuilt, with new traffic signals. Wellington Street and the underpass also received upgrades, including concrete repairs and road replacement. The city said it worked with London Hydro to upgrade underground hydro utilities.
“York Street is an important corridor in our downtown, but beneath the road was some of London’s oldest infrastructure,” said Ashley Rammeloo, the city’s director of water, wastewater and stormwater.
Finishing touches will continue this fall, but the city said they will not need a full road closure. It did not give a completion date.
Drivers who still run into work zones can find other projects on the city’s Renew London map at maps.london.ca/renewlondon. Questions can go to Service London at 519-661-2489 or 3-1-1 within the city, or by email at [email protected].
The project is one of several road jobs under way in London. The city has also posted notices about a temporary closure of Richmond Street for rail crossing repairs and lane restrictions on Highbury Avenue North. Our election coverage looks at the mayor who will oversee the next term of that infrastructure work, and our guide to landlord heat rules covers another winter question for tenants.
