Madrid, Spain, April 22, 2026 – Samarkand (Uzbekistan) will host next weekend, from April 24 to 26, the opening event of the Triathlon World Series. This competition marks the start of a key season for the international future of the sport, as 2026 serves as a prelude to the launch of the “Triathlon World Tour,” the new global circuit promoted by World Triathlon and the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), which aims to redefine the competitive structure of triathlon worldwide.
In this context, World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany highlighted the importance of this event for global triathlon: “It is a very important moment, the start of the World Series. Moreover, doing so in a new venue like Samarkand, in Uzbekistan, and with joint Triathlon and Paratriathlon events reinforces our commitment to the inclusive development of the sport. For me, it is very significant that we begin both events together.”
“2026 is shaping up to be a key year, as it clearly sets the course toward what will be the ‘Triathlon World Tour.’ It will be a season with a broader calendar, with a Series reaching 10 events, making it the largest in recent years. Furthermore, finishing in Pontevedra adds special value for me,” adds Arimany, who was born in Madrid.
Asked about the Abu Dhabi World Series event that had to be postponed due to the situation in the Middle East, President Arimany said: “We are working to be able to hold this event later, when the situation in the region has improved.”
The arrival of Hyrox to World Triathlon
World Triathlon continues to move forward in the evolution of the triathlon ecosystem with the incorporation of new disciplines. In this regard, the emergence of Hyrox represents an opportunity for growth and expansion toward new audiences.
“The arrival of Hyrox is a great opportunity for triathlon. Not only are we incorporating a rapidly growing discipline, but we are also opening the door to a new community that may feel attracted to our sport,” Arimany stated.
Finally, the president of the International Federation also referred to the milestone achieved by triathlon with the historic record of 63 countries that will participate in the Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Dakar from October 31 to November 13. “Dakar 2026 will be a historic moment for triathlon. Seeing 63 countries competing on African soil for the first time is proof of the great work of our federations and the vision of the International Olympic Committee. For us, these championships are of great importance for the development of these young athletes, who will be the future stars of our sport.”
